Portugal Visa Requirements
Following other EU counterparts, Portugal’s student visa policies are quite the same as the others. Citizens from the EU/EFTA nations do not need a visa to come to Portugal to study, however, they will need to provide a regulatory residence certificate from the local community council for study periods longer than 90 days.
On the opposite hand, citizens from nations outside the EU must arrive with a student visa into Portugal. The visa may or may not guarantee their entry, they will subsequently need a residence permit to remain in the country.
Visas are issued by the Portuguese embassy or consulate in the applicant’s country of origin before they can travel to Portugal.
New students can apply for a residence permit from Immigration and Border Services in Portugal upon arrival or within two weeks of their arrival.
Portuguese Student Visa Types and Permits
Short-study programs for 3 months or less: Individuals from EU member states and other nations like Australia, USA, Canada, and New Zealand do not require a visa for short study durations. All other countries not stated or listed must obtain and Type C Schengen visa.
Student visa for programs longer than 3 months: Students from countries from outside of the EU require a Schengen visa type D to come to Portugal.
Important general documentation for both Schengen visa type C and D includes;
- Passport or travel document
- 2 current passport-sized photographs
- Proof of financial sufficiency
- Proof of accommodation (sufficient funds can cover thhşs document option as adequate funds can cover the cost for housing/living arrangements)
- Acceptance letter from the university
- Health and Travel insurance
- Proof of payment of the tuition fee if requested
- Police report
- Visa fee payment receipt
There is a Portuguese visa fee which stands at €99 (as of 2019), short study visas cost €60. Countries like Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, and Kosovo pay a subsidized visa fee of €35.
