Panama has decided on avail education to all nationalities for FREE!

Compare the situation to that in the United Kingdom, for instance, and other countries where the student loan system applies: that can mean that although young people can get an education, they enter the working world already saddled with considerable owings.

About Panama

Where and what is Panama? If you are still pondering then welcome to our RocApply About Panama information page. Let’s get started…

The country is the farthest south and the last of the Central American nations, and if you were to take an “S” shape and shift it on its side, that is Panama.

Snaking its way from west to east, connecting with mainland Latin America, and divided only by the colossal ‘Panama Canal’, the country has an undulating landscape.

With a long coast at the Caribbean Sea and another at the Pacific Ocean, water and beaches play an important role in this country’s appeal. Yet, with some of the most untouched rainforest in the world, green vegetation and local wildlife provide an attraction in this tropical nation.

Owing to its strategic location, Panama is popular amongst sailors launching yachting excursions westwards to the Pacific, or linking east with the Caribbean Sea. Yet on land Panama is quite exquisite, with one-third of the country reserved as a protected region.

From mountainous and volcanic peaks, to dense rainforest, to bright sandy beaches, the country has it all.

Because of the country’s historic position of the famous trans-oceanic shipping canal, Panama City, the nation’s capital, is one of the most developed cities in the South American, centered on trade and commerce.

You will find glitz and glamour in the city, but the wonder of the virgin nature away from the capital in Panama provides a welcome contrast.

The interior of Panama is known to be a hub to some of the country’s friendliest locals, and they are very welcoming of the expanding tourism sector in their region.

You’ll find value-for-money accommodation here whilst roaming the villages viewing genuine handicraft items, such as the famous ‘Panama Hat’. Panama City offers a range of western standard hotels, varying in price.

At beachside locations you will find a great choice of comfortable resort-style accommodations, or you can choose to stay in a more traditional historic colonial town location, which all spoils you with modern-day conveniences.

You may not want to spend time seeing all of the fifty-mile long Panama Canal, but to gain a sense of the uniqueness of this strategic waterway that has shaped the economics of the 20th century you can take a peek at Miraflores Locks, and watch the ships go by.

There is a foreign center there with easy access from Panama City. If heading west from the capital, a trip to the Gulf of Chiriqui marine park, which is a well-known spot for whale touring in the Pacific Ocean is worthwhile.

Also in the gulf is the ‘Coiba’ marine park, often referred to as the ‘Galapagos Islands’ of Central America, because of its diverse t biological diversity and marine life, with awesome diving and snorkeling potential.

If heading east you can visit some of the ‘Darien’ rainforest, one of the densest primeval rainforests in Latin America, providing a natural time held barrier with the continent to the south, although any excursion in this region would be mainly for an experienced trailblazer due to its pristine nature.

As a tropical country, Panama has two distinct seasons: the wet season, and the dry season. The rainy season lasts between May and November, although the northern Caribbean side of Panama undergoes showers all year round.

The drier months in the country are February to March, and September to October. Between mid-December and mid-April is the dry season, although it still may rain during this period, from the occasional shower to a downpour lasting many days.

But also, during the rainy season there is also bound to be a high prevalence of sunshine between the rains.

Navigating Panama is only achievable by road as there are no train lines and the domestic air services are limited and far between. Car rentals are available but there’re no international companies on offer.

There are, however, a few reputable local rental agencies such as Rocapply Rental Car which do just as good a job. Taxis can be flagged down from the side of the road and prices should be decided upon before the journey begins. We hope you enjoy your stay in Panama!

About Panama's Economy

The knowledge of economic performance for a given country can serve a long way in choosing which country to pick for a semester abroad! To this aid, we have made sure you keep well-informed through our Panama Economy guide what entails domestic and foreign income here.

The information is overall but you may need to read more on the reviews from trusted sources to gain a deeper understanding of the economic performance.

The country has been one of the fastest-growing economies in Latin America over the past decade, with real GDP expanding an average of 8.4% between 2004 and 2013.

Moreover, Panama performed relatively great during the global financial crisis, including 4.0% growth in 2009 when many other countries in the region suffered a contraction. The Panamanian economy accelerated in the following years, reaching double-digit growth rates in 2010 and 2011.

The economy of Panama is based on a highly-developed services sector, which represents more than 75% of gross domestic product (GDP). The Panama Canal and the use of the USD have promoted the strengthening of a globally-oriented services economy.

The Panama Canal is important to global trade and accounts for almost 10% of the country’s GDP. Other important components of the service economy are the Colon Free Trade Zone (CFZ).

The CFZ is the second largest free port in the world, and the Trans-Panama Pipeline, which allows for the transport of crude oil between the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. The license and registry of the Panama flag to merchant ships is another source of economic activity.

Panama also has a large logistics and storage services sector, as well as a modern banking and insurance sector. The agricultural sector has lost importance over the years, accounting for less than 10% of GDP today.

The main cash crops produced in the country are bananas, corn, coffee and sugar.

The expansion of the Panama Canal has been a major source of economic activity since the project began in early 2007. Projected at a cost of USD 5.5 billion, the construction of wider locks and deeper channels will allow for passage of larger container freight ships, help the canal remain competitive in the realm of global trade and therefore sustain toll income.

Other large public spending infrastructure projects have also pushed economic growth in recent years and solidified Panama’s standing as a major logistical hub in the region.

While the Panama Canal and related activity were historically the main economic engines, growth is now also being driven by a modern banking and financial services industry.

This sector, which features more than 80 established banking and financial institutions, including insurance and reinsurance companies, has developed greatly thanks to the free flow of capital, adherence to international regulation standards, the dollarized economy and a stable political atmosphere.
