About Palestine

The Palestinian National Authority is the governing body that stands as the internal governing organ for many regions of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

It was first established in 1994 following the Oslo Peace Accord but has not experienced stable governance since. The region has been outstandingly hit by violent conflicts between Israeli forces and Palestinian troops, especially during the Intifada uprisings of the 1990s and 2000s.

Unfortunately, since 2004, the country has also fallen into civil war, as the Fatah and Hamas parties turned against each other following Yasser Arafat’s death.

However, despite the violence that frequents the PNA, visitors and students still enjoy the heart of the Holy Land. The PNA is home to some of the most renowned religious spots in the world. With a history that dates back to before biblical times, the Holy Land lures thousands of foreigners annually.

The state is home to old cities like Nazareth, Bethlehem, Jericho, and East Jerusalem, all of which command famous religious and historical monuments, such as the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem and the Qumran Caves near Jericho area.

The roads around the region aren't always at their best, but tour vans and rental cars can be used to reach the sites just outside the major cities.

There are literally hundreds of significant spots found across the PNA, many of which still radiate striking beauty, despite their weathered looks.

Accommodation is available across the region. The main cities of the region, including Jericho, Bethlehem, and Ramallah, are where most foreigners will find more upscale hotels.

There are several internationally-popular chains situated in the main conurbations, and tourists visiting on a budget will also find plenty of cheap options, including hostels and lodges. Tourist villages are also built to accommodate travelers, boasting cheap rates and decent facilities.

Middle Eastern staple is the best diet in the PNA. Dishes with hummus and olives are common, along with simple meat cuisines. However, Western cuisine can also be found in cities like Bethlehem and Ramallah.

The local brew is known as Taybeh, the only beer brewed in the region. There are no international airports within the SOP. There was an airport serving the Gaza Strip, but this was demolished by Israeli forces during the Intifadas.

Nowadays, most tourists heading into the PNA fly into Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport, then transfer by taxi, rental car, or by bus to Jerusalem. Passing into S.O.P East Jerusalem is relatively simple.

The entire trip from the airport to East Jerusalem will take just less than an hour. Tourists with Palestinian ID cards have to pass through Amman’s Queen Alia International Airport, then cross the Allenby Bridge into SOP land.

The best way to navigate this beautiful country is by shared taxi, which have fixed routes but no set prices. RocApply Car Rental is available and tends to cheaper because of the low cost of vehicles and fuel prices.

There are no train services, but the bus network is extensive and reliable also. It’s possible to navigate most regions by bicycle although cyclists should be aware that conditions in most cities are rather not safe.

The state of Palestine which consists of two regions, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip has not yet been recognized as an independent nation. Only one-hundred and thirty-five member nations of the world have recognized Palestine as an independent state.

However, efforts to create an independent state of Palestine have been limited by continuous confrontations with Israel. The Palestinian Liberation Organisation has emerged as the leading group struggling for the independence of Palestine.

Real gross domestic product growth in the Palestinian economy was barely positive in 2018 due to a steep deterioration in Gaza and a slowdown in the West Bank.

Gaza’s economy has been kept afloat in recent years by large transfers including donor initiatives and spending through the budget of the Palestinian Authority, both of which amounted to 70%-80% of Gaza’s GDP.

However, these two sources have significantly declined recently resulting in economic activity in Gaza contracting by 8 percent in 2018.

In the West Bank, real growth has fallen to around 2% in 2018, lower than its average in previous years as the reduction in aid inflows and the recurring clashes with the Israeli forces have impacted economic activity.

Under a baseline scenario that assumes a continuation of the Israeli restrictive regime and the persistence of the internal divide between the West Bank and Gaza, private sector activity is not expected to rise and real GDP growth of the Palestinian economy is expected to hover around 0.5%-1.6% between 2019 and 2021.

This development level implies a yearly decline in real per capita income by around 2-3%. Inflation will remain subdued with inflation staggering around 2 percent in 2019-2021.

Despite the PA’s efforts to increase revenues and rationalize expenditure, the Israeli decision to reduce transfers of VAT and import duties collected on behalf of the will negatively impact the PA’s fiscal situation in the coming years.

A continued decline in foreign aid is also expected, hence, the fiscal deficit is projected to reach 6.5 percent of GDP in the forecast period.
