Accommodation for Students in Norway

Accommodation in Norway vary from region to region as with many other countries in the world, the bigger cities like Oslo, cost way more than smaller regions.

The common housing options for students in Norway is the Dormitory housing within the campus, this type of accommodation options are usually institution specified and have different amounts and options. Please check the university profile for more information on-campus housing.

The other two kinds of living situation that is relevant for students are; renting an apartment on your own or renting just a room in an apartment complex or just home-sharing. With home-sharing, the bathroom, kitchen are shared but the student has a room to themselves.

Many students opt for home-sharing with other students not only for the price but also for educational factors, like similar courses, drive, and motivation to study from fellow students.

In bigger cities, you can expect to pay 5000 to 7000 NOK which will include heating and electricity while rent in smaller cities usually goes for a much more reduced fee of 3500 to 4000 NOK.

The function of how expensive the room is depends on the size of the room, the location and how good the facilities in the apartment are. Electricity, Wi-fi, and Television are also included with the rent. The rooms are often partially furnished.

Students looking for accommodation can apply for student housing through an organization called ‘Studentskipnaden’ which is present in all the major cities and they basically partner with universities to provide really good accommodation offers from 3000 – 5000 NOK. This is a really good price as it will include electricity and other utilities. Although the kitchen is shared with other houseguests, each room has its own bathroom.

Because of how fairly priced housing with studentskipnaden is, there is usually a long waiting list and there is a high demand for them, but the good news here is that international students are prioritized.

Many other special discounts for Gym and even sports facilities are also provided on the platform.

Students who want more privacy can rent an apartment (studio) for about 10,000 NOK per month and does not include electricity, but with a partial chance of Wi-fi and cable tv included.

Students can also get a two-bedroom apartment in bigger cities for 12,000 to 14,000 NOK, and 7,000 to 10,000 NOK in smaller cities per month which usually include electricity and other utilities.
