About Niue

When Captain James Cook tried to enter the small South Pacific island of Niue in 1774, the natives drove him back no fewer than three times. Their ferocious-looking red teeth caused the frightened Cook to name this small territory “Savage Island.” Today’s tourists are guaranteed a much peaceful welcome and a far more peaceful environment on this relatively unknown island whose main concerns are the occasional typhoon and a sharply decreasing population. No fewer than 1,400 people now remain on Niue, whose tourism industry has only just begun to flourish.

Niue’s capital and largest community, Alofi, is tiny more than a village of just 581 people. Alofi is also home to the island’s government headquarters and airport, as well as most food outlets and shopping opportunities. The few typically sandy and white South Pacific beaches found here are crusted between the island’s dominant landscape of towering cliffs perched above spacious caves. Harmless, yet exotic, plants and wildlife flourish in the Huvalu Forest Conservation Area’s tropical rainforests, which occupy 20% of the total island land mass.

Low tide is the safest and best time to explore most of Niue’s multiple caverns and caves. One of the island’s largest limestone caves, Avaiki, was once a constant meeting place for island kings. Many more impressive caves, cliffs, and coral walls await snorkelers and scuba divers beneath the surrounding water’s surface. The underwater visibility ranks among the great in the entire Pacific Ocean. Tamakautoga Sea Track and Beach is among the few white sandy beaches on the world’s largest coral island.

The vast majority of Niue’s 90 guest rooms are situated in or near Alofi. Although advance booking is preferable, most foreigners won’t have trouble finding a room on the spot on this largely unknown island. Residence range from a small four-room establishment for backpackers to mid-range guest houses, to self-contained rooms and cottages. Villas built entirely from limestone are the island’s most unique accommodations. Camping on public land is allowed, but not encouraged due to large numbers of mosquitoes. The island’s east side contains no hotels at all. Traditional kai feasts served in underground umu pits are the best places to experience authentic Niuean cuisine.

Bigger crowds gather to watch the weekly flights between Niue International Airport, the only airport on the island, and Auckland, New Zealand. At the moment, these flights are the only ones listed on this small airport’s schedule. An entire day’s time difference lies between Auckland and Niue, which are located at opposite ends of the International Dateline. Private yachts and a freighter which sails to Tonga once a month are the only other means to reach the island.

Agriculture (with the exception of coffee and copra plantations along the coastal and lagoon perimeters), fishing, manufacturing, and tourism are of lesser value to the overall economy. However, Nauru has an exclusive economic zone extending 200 miles (320 km) offshore. The sale of commercial fishing licenses started to bring in a steady revenue during the 1990s.

Phosphate has been mined on Nauru since 1907. For decades it was the country’s main resource and sole export, dominating the island’s economy, and its quality was the highest in the world. The phosphate industry and government services together offered almost all of the island’s salaried employment. For much of the 20th century the phosphate industry was owned and run by a corporation jointly managed by the British, Australian, and New Zealand governments.

The government of independent Nauru gained power of phosphate operations in 1970, and in the 1980s Nauru was for a time one of the richest countries in the world in terms of gross domestic product per capita. Landowners received royalties from the phosphate earnings, and most Nauruans were unemployed by choice. By the late 20th century, however, the phosphate deposits were quickly becoming exhausted, and the country experienced a severe drop-off in earnings, leading to the country’s near bankruptcy by the early years of the 21st century.

Nauru struggled to grow other resources and find alternative sources of income. However, the country experienced some economic respite late in the first decade of the 2000s when repairs and changes to mining-related infrastructure expedited the extraction and export of the remaining primary phosphate reserves and allowed the more difficult extraction of secondary phosphate deposits.

Transportation on the island is great. A paved road system links all villages. Surface transportation to other destinations is chalenging. Because there are no wharves or natural harbours, passengers and cargo are shuttled by barge between oceangoing vessels and a small artificial anchorage. Most regional and international travel is by air. The country’s sole airport is situated in Yaren district. In 1970 the country launched its national airline, control of which was transferred in 1996 to a government-owned corporation.
