Secondary education schools in Nigeria consist of two stages, Junior Secondary, and Senior Secondary school.

  • Levels: 2 (Junior Secondary, and Senior Secondary School)
  • Duration of study: 6 years (3 years Junior secondary and 3 years Senior Secondary)

Junior Secondary School

The junior secondary school encompasses grades seven through nine and around the ages of 12 to 14. Students will take the Junior Secondary Certificate Examination (JSCE) in the night grade which will be a qualifying exam for senior secondary school. Junior Secondary School encompasses JSS I to JSS 3 which is equivalent to the 7th, 8th, and 9th Grade.

Junior secondary school curriculum

The junior secondary school curriculum encompasses a variety of subjects including English, mathematics, integrated science, social studies, introductory technology, business studies, home economics, fine art, French, Nigerian languages(Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba), Arabic, Christian religious knowledge, Islamic religious knowledge, agricultural science, music, physical education, and health education.

Senior Secondary School

The senior secondary school takes 3 years and encompasses SS I, SS 2, and SS 3 which is equivalent to the 10th, 11th, and 12th Grade respectively. At the end of the SS 3, students will sit for The Senior Secondary School Examination (SSCE). The Senior Secondary Certificate Examination is a requirement for undergraduate admission into any Nigerian University.

Senior Secondary School Curriculum

The senior secondary school is broad and includes a variety of subjects including English language, mathematics, literature in English, Nigerian languages( Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba), biology, chemistry, physics, economics, commerce, food and nutrition, clothing, and textile, home management, computer science or typing, French, music, applied electricity, auto mechanics, technical drawing, history, geography, Christian religious knowledge, Islamic religious knowledge, accounting, government, physical education, agriculture, Arabic, woodwork, metalwork, to mention but a few. All Senior Secondary students are required to study English, Mathematics, one Science subject, and at least one Indigenous language. Students can select the rest of the subjects as electives, depending on their interests. Subject areas include Sciences, Social Sciences or the Arts.

Prospective students

Admission into the school is through an Entrance Examination, taken before the beginning of every school year. Prospective candidates must purchase and complete an application form before they are qualified to take the examination. Note that the maximum admission for Senior School 1 is 125 and apply as soon as possible.

On admission, parents are required to submit the following:

  • Copies of birth certificate
  • Copies of the medical report.

Ray-Field International Secondary School

This is a government-approved co-educational, full and compulsory boarding school in the Akwa Ibom State. This is a school made up of the nursery, primary and secondary sections. Entry into Junior Secondary 1

  • The applicant must be at least 10 years old
  • Must have completed grade 11 at the previous school.
  • Must provide Testimonials from the previous school.
  • The students will take an entry test in areas including Mathematics, English, and General Paper.

Entry into Junior Secondary 2 and Senior Secondary 1

  • Transfer students will have to provide testimonials from the previous school.
  • Students will be tested in English, Mathematics, and Basic Science.

Entry into Senior Secondary 2

Transfer students from other schools have to provide testimonials from their previous schools along with other required documents.

Students will also be tested in various areas as follows:

  • Art and Commercial classes will be tested in English, Mathematics, and Government or Economics
  • Sciences students will be tested in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics
