Jobs for Students in New Zealand

Student Jobs in New Zealand

Admittedly the government of New Zealand has permitted part-time employment for international students completing an academic program in the country. However, some important things to note include;

  • Students who are enrolled fully in a study program can work for 20 hours per week and can also work more on weekends and holidays but must take note of being aware of the conditions stated in their visa
  • Their student visa is only granted if the student can prove that they have adequate finance to their academics, living, and other general costs.
  • The minimum wage for an adult is 13 NZD for an hour.
  • Working and studying in New Zealand have been proven to help sustain students not only with their general costs but also in savings.

Some easy jobs that students can quickly pick up with little to no experience include supermarket jobs, care worker jobs, housekeeping, restaurant jobs, delivery jobs, factory jobs, etc

These jobs are not actually difficult and they allow time off for students who have important school schedules. Many establishments in New Zealand are very conscious of the students’ academic priorities are always lenient in that regard.

Also, a student can take up volunteer jobs in their university which includes faculty administration roles, library attendant, student association roles, international office roles as well. These jobs are paid jobs and they require a great level of dedication from the student. Working hours are conducive and students are not overworked.

Lastly many postgraduate and graduate students gain employment in their departments as teaching assistants or research assistants. These jobs are dependent on their availability but if secured, usually come with scholarships and a living stipend for the student.
