Accommodation for students In New Zealand

Find Programs
(Bachelor's, Master's & PhD)

Another fundamental part of living as a student in New Zealand is accommodation. There are three options for housing as a student in New Zealand and one of them would most definitely be suitable for any personal or budgetary specifics.

Private Renting

Students can rent private flats or apartments depending on what they want and can be found anywhere closer to their campus or farther into the town. There is something for everyone and they offer furnished spaces with utilities such as heating, electricity, and internet. Students can stay in one bedroom studio flats and bear all the costs of the space or decide to share with housemates in a two or three-bedroom apartment. They can share the rental costs and the other utility bills as well.

Homestay Accommodation

This option involves seeking out a room in a family home or with a family; where they provide a well-furnished room paired with breakfast, lunch and, dinner. They also help with your daily life in New Zealand.

As a foreign student, this option is very good because it helps integrate you into the culture and helps you get to know the people on a personal level. Basically giving you a new family away from your home family.

Hostel and Dormitory Accommodation

Within the school campus or at least a walkable distance from the school, hostels are usually the first options for students coming into New Zealand. Residence halls are usually single, double or shared amongst four persons.

Common rooms, kitchen, laundry rooms, dining facility, and other facilities are basically shared by a number of students. Specific dormitories are tailored for one gender and some allow mixed genders to co-habit.

Hostels are owned and run by the university but there are also private dormitories that run in the same manner but they also have with the apartment type construct.

Living on campus is very good if you wish to be an active member of the student body or partake in the many events that happen within the campus all year round.

The price for housing in the country varies from place to place depending on whatever standards the student is comfortable with, the typical cost for housing is 600 NZD per week and 220 NZD per room.
