American International School of Mozambique (AISM)

This is a school located in Maputo and is Maputo’s first IB World School offering a US-style preparatory program covering Early childhood learning through grade 12. It is a private, coeducational school for international students offering tutoring in the English language. The school offers programs that are developmentally appropriate, effective, progressive, and empowering for high school students.

Curriculum- the school offers a variety of programs at the secondary level in the areas of the Arts, science, design, mathematics, language, and literature, language - world languages, individuals and societies, and physical education.

The school offers the Middle Years Program (MYP) for the 6th to the 10th grade that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. It comprises eight subject groups that provide a broad and balanced education. Subjects here include Language and Literature (English, Portuguese, and French), Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Mathematics, Sciences, Physical and Health Education, Design, Music, Drama, and Visual Arts.

The International Baccalaureate Program is offered for grades 11 and 12. It aims to develop students with excellent breadth and depth of knowledge and who will flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally, and ethically. The curriculum here is made up of six subject groups and the core subjects, comprising theory of knowledge, creativity, activity, service, and the extended essay. These are as follows:

Individuals and Societies- History, Economics, Geography, Environmental Systems and Societies

Curriculum

Key Stage 3- is used to refer to the three years of schooling also known as Year 7, Year 8, and Year 9 under the Cambridge International Syllabus. Key Stage 3 refers to the first three years of secondary education.

Key Stage 4- comprises Grade 10 and Grade. This stage prepares students to write examinations set by the Cambridge International Examinations Board (CIE), the internationally recognized International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) written at the end of Grade 11. Students here are expected to take at least eight subjects of which three are compulsory and five are optional. The compulsory subjects include English as a 1st Language and Literature, Portuguese as a 1st Language or foreign language, French or Chinese Mandarin, and Mathematics.

The remaining five subjects are the optional subjects that include Accounting, Art and Design, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Computer Studies, Design and Technology, Development Studies, Economics, Environmental Management, History, Music, Physical Education, and Physics.

Key Stage 5- After completing Grade 11 with the IGCSE exams, many students take AS and A-level qualifications in Years 12 and 13. Students can mix subjects in the areas of Maths, Sciences or English, and Humanities, but those who want to focus on a specific career path can choose specific subjects.

Sports- the school believes that sport plays an integral part in the development and education of students. students are encouraged to participate in sporting activities, including inter-house and inter-school competitions in the following sports codes: Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Field Hockey, Athletics (Track and Field), Swimming, Tennis, and Track and Field sports.

Prospective students

The school accepts international students from any country. Parents or guardians who intend to enroll their children here must make sure they meet all the requirements, and an application here does not necessarily mean acceptance. They should provide the following for admission:

This is an international school in Maputo that seeks to empower students with the creative, intellectual, and decision-making skills necessary for them to become academically, socially, physically, and emotionally successful and responsible. The school offers education from reception to grade 12 and offers Instruction is in English and with additional courses in Portuguese.
