Elementary education in Mauritius starts at the age of six and is free at public schools but parents, need to cover other fees for various items like stationery, teaching materials, or uniforms, to mention but a few. Private schools are fee-paying and fees vary depending on the school. Primary education lasts for 6 years and students will sit for the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC) which guarantees entry into secondary education.

Curriculum- the basic education curriculum in Mauritius is organized into three curriculum stages, which last three years each. These include the Foundation Stage (Grades 1 to 3), the Consolidation Stage (Grades 4 to 6), and the Orientation Stage (Grades 7 to 9).
