About Mali

Mali is a landlocked country located in West Africa. Its capital city is the city of Bamako. Mali has a population of about 20.25 million as of 2020 making it the 59th most populated country in the world. Its population density is 11.7 people per square meter.

The official language of Mali is French. An estimated 65% of Mali’s area is desert or semi-desert. Mali has an estimated 42. % of the urban population and about 57.6% of the rural population.

Mali is classified as low to a middle-income country. Its currency is the CFA Franc (XOF). Mali’s freedom score is at 55.9, making it the 126th freest economy in the 2020 index. The majority of people in Mali rely mostly on subsistence agriculture.

Mali largely depends on gold mining and agricultural exports to get their revenue. The sale or export of gold and cotton makes up to about 80% of earnings.

Mali has over the years also been trying to grow its iron extraction industry to reduce reliance or dependence on gold exports alone.

Mali’s GDP is estimated at $44,329 billion and the GDP per capita at $2271. In 2002, Mali produced an amazing 66 tonnes of Gold and as of 2018 new mines were opened and output increased to about 61 tonnes.

The government of Mali is investing in the diversification of the mining industry. Mali has untapped potential deposits of uranium, lithium, manganese, bauxite, phosphates, and iron.

Agriculture products include cotton, millet, rice, corn, vegetables, peanuts, cattle, sheep, and goats. Cotton is the second largest export and more than 4 million Malians are cotton farmers who contribute about 15% of exports.

Mali is Africa’s top cotton producer. Industries include food processing, construction, phosphate, and gold mining. The industrial growth rate was estimated at 6.3% as of 2017.

Mali’s exports were valued at CFA 440.68 Billion in the last quarter of 2019 and increased to about CFA 482.29 in the first quarter of 2020. Exports were made up of gold, cotton, pure-bred bovine animals, sheep, fertilizers, cement, refined petroleum, and parts.

Its export partners include South Africa, Switzerland, Bangladesh, Cote d’Ivoire, Uganda, Senegal, France, Netherlands, China, and Burkina Faso to name but a few.

Mali’s imports were valued at US$4337 million as of 2017 Its imports included mineral fuels, nuclear reactors, machinery, vehicles, electrical equipment, cereals, medication and equipment, cigarettes, and plastic, to name but a few.

The government has however tried to subsidize cereal production to stop reliance on other countries for cereals. Import partners include Germany, France, South Africa, The United States of America, China, India, Niger, and the Netherlands, to name but a few..
