About Malawi Economy
The economy of Malawi is mostly based on Agriculture, with about 80% of the population living in rural areas and practicing subsistence farming Subsistence farmers produce a variety of crops, including maize, beans, rice, cassava, tobacco, and groundnuts). Agriculture accounted for about one-third of GDP and about 80% of exports as of 2017.
The Malawian kwacha is the official currency of Malawi. The Gross domestic product (GDP) was at US$7.065 billion, GDP per capita at US$389.40, the Gross national income was at 23.72 billion as of 2018. Malawi’s economic growth rose from 4.4% to about 5.5%. Growth was made possible by a good agricultural season.
Malawi’s exports were estimated at about US$1.443 billion. Export goods for Malawi include tobacco which is the main export product with about 55%, dried legumes contributing 8.8%, sugar contributing 6.7%, tea at 5.7%, cotton at 2%, other products include peanuts, coffee, peanuts, wood products, soy, and uranium.
