Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience and, should you choose Liberia, our RocApply tips and guides will enhance what will already be a wonderful trip. Liberian culture is one of the most distinct and unique in Africa.

An eclectic blend of the old and the new combined with the perfect mix of race and ethnicities work together to create a diversity that gives Liberia an extraordinary charm and a uniquely welcoming atmosphere.

The culture of Liberia has two distinct roots, the Southern USA heritage of the freed Americo-Liberian slaves and the ancient African descendants of the indigenous people and migratory tribes.

Most former Americans belonged to the Masonic Order of Liberia, outlawed in 1980, but originally playing a huge part in the nation’s politics. Settlers introduced the skills of embroidery and quilting with them, with both now firmly embedded in the national culture.

The haunting slave music and songs of the American South with ancient African rhythms and harmonies blended well with indigenous musical traditions of the country back then.

The diverse tribal ethnicities making up the population of Liberia today have all added to the richness of culture and life in the country. Christian music is popular here, with hymns sung acapella in the iconic African style.

Spirituality and the region’s ancient rituals are reflected in the unusually intricate carving style, and modern artists are finding fame beyond boarders. Dance is a valued act, with the Liberian National Culture Group giving performances both in the country and overseas based on traditional arenas.

You will find the Liberian people are very friendly and sociable. However, they do not take kindly to being ignored and will call you ‘rude’. Make sure that you greet as many people as possible and smile when you do so when you are in Liberia.

Make friends with any guard, cleaner etc that you come across, introduce yourself and remembering their names can go along way into making new friends.

Your security will also improve as the locals will warn you of security threats if they know you and know that they can talk to you often. Handshaking is the normality, usually followed by a finger snap here.

 Etiquette in Liberia

Hospitality has a long history of tradition in Liberia where the guests are treated with deep courtesy and given best possible treatment from the host. Being proud of this tradition we recommend you to follow some rules that follow:

  • Greetings: Handshakes are the common way to greet others in both formal and personal settings, but the handshake is tough to master; after the shake, the middle finger clicks against the other person's, creating a snapping sound.
  • Dress: Dress conservatively and neatly as often as possible, especially if get invited into someone's home.
  • Gifts: It is normal for locals to ask foreigners for money, and acceptable to give it even so. Each individual needs to decide if they will do so or not.
