Latvia is a very pocket-friendly country for all and especially students, Riga, the capital city is home to approximately 80% of the population and will be our focal city for this section.

Like you would assume, the cost of living in any country is dependent on several factors such as location, budget, personal lifestyle choices, and more. Since Latvia is an EU country, they use the European Euro as their currency of exchange.

Accommodation in Latvia ranges from €150 to €250 depending on the proximity to the city center, houses here range from studios, one-bedroom, and two bedrooms respectively. Living in the city center costs more but comes with all its advantages such as ease of access to places and transport facilities.

After rent, utilities such as electricity, water, heating, etc, would be another aspect to consider, in Latvia the cost of utilities is seasonal. In the summer, utilities cost about €60 and in the winter they might go up to €100. Obviously, utility cost is determined by apartment type and how much electricity, water, heating, and others are consumed on average every month.

Basic living expenses such as food for one person might cost around €150 a month which encompasses both the occasional eating out or cooking at home. Opting to solely cook at home might bring the cost down to €100 monthly. Personal preferences are also factored in when it comes to feeding, but on average most students in the country spend around €100 to €200 a month.

For transportation in Latvia, all the buses, trains, trams, and trolleybuses have the same prices because they are owned by the same company. One bus ride costs €1.20, which means in a month it might cost €50 on average for moving around. There are also smart cards that students can apply for and get discounts and deals for transportation and monthly tickets.

Individuals who live in the city center or near it can walk or ride a bicycle to save money. Taxis are also a very effective and readily available means of getting around, they are not very expensive but they are a little bit more costly than public transport.

For mobile phone services, you can expect to pay €20 for a start, and then it will depend on your needs and usage. If you do not wish to have a mobile contract, you can always use prepaid cards or top-up cards which start from €1.99 and you can use them for a couple of months.

For internet, Latvia has one of the fastest internet connections in the world and it is rather cheap in comparison with most countries in the EU. Superfast unlimited internet in your home would start from €20 and you can weigh your demand and go a little bit higher progressively. In Latvia, even the cheapest internet connection is a lot better than in most European countries.
