Laos has several universities offering world-class facilities and internationally recognized degrees. The following is a list of universities found in Laos.
The National University of Laos
This is a university in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. It was founded in 1996, with departments brought in from other existing colleges. it is the only national university in the country which accepts students from all over the country and international students as well.
The National University of Laos is made up of 13 faculties namely the Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Laws, and Political Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Sport Science and Physical Education, and the Faculty of Water Resources
Souphanouvong University (SU)
This is a university in Luang Prabang. It is one of the national universities in the country. It was established on 4 November 2003 and inaugurated on the following day. The University is named after Prince Souphanouvong, who was the first President of Laos.
The university is a public national educational and cultural institution run by the Ministry of Education. it carries out the educational function of preparing specialists, researchers, and multidisciplinary scientific scholars, organizing scientific research, protecting and promoting Laos’s unique national and multiethnic arts and culture, and delivering academic services to society.
The university has two main campuses. The main campus, in Ban Donmay, covering an area of 110 hectares, and the Faculty of Education, covering a land area of 2 hectares located much closer to the city, in Ban Nasang-Veuy.
Programs and courses- Souphanouvong University currently offers 20 undergraduate bachelor's degrees, each with a 4-year duration. Faculties and degree offered include:
- The Faculty of Education- Lao language and literacy, English, and mathematics.
- The Faculty of Economics and Tourism- economics, general business management, tourism management, IT business management, international business management, and finance and banking.
- The Faculty of Agriculture and Forest Resources- plant science, animal science, forest resources, and food science and technology.
- The Faculty of Engineering- electrical engineering, computer engineering, and civil engineering.
- The Faculty of Architecture- architecture and interior design.
- The Faculty of Languages- Lao language, general English language, Korean Language Centre, and the Chinese Language Centre.
The University has established academic relations and cooperation with 33 universities and organizations in neighboring countries such as Vietnam, the People's Republic of China, Cambodia, Thailand, and the Republic of Korea. T
he main cooperation activities focus on scholar and student exchanges, library book and computer supply, as well as co-organizing international seminars, workshops, and meetings.
University of Health Sciences
This unique university was established in June 2007 for health professional training in the country. This university is composed of six faculties, two cabinets, and one institution. University of Health Sciences does not have a University hospital but have five affiliated hospitals.
The University of Health Sciences is a part of a larger Complex Hospitals-Instituto-Projecto-University, gathering the referent national and regional hospitals where the students follow their practice training.
It is composed of 7 faculties namely the faculty of basic sciences, faculty of medicine, faculty of pharmacy, faculty of dentistry, faculty of nursing sciences, faculty of medical technology, faculty of postgraduate studies, and cabinet of UHS-Laos.
