Elementary education is the beginning of compulsory education for all Japanese children and lasts for 6 years from grades 1 to 6. Upon completion of primary education, students will move to junior secondary education, which is the second and final stage of basic and compulsory education in Japan.

The curriculum of the elementary school is divided into 3 main groups namely regular subjects, moral education, and extracurricular activities. Subjects offered to include Japanese language, social studies, arithmetic, science, life environmental studies, music, arts and crafts, physical education, and home-making.

The elementary curriculum emphasizes the intellectual and moral development of the child. All students must take certain compulsory subjects including Japanese language, mathematics, science, social studies, music, crafts, home economics, living environment studies, and physical education.
