Secondary education in Indonesia lasts 6 years, 3 years of junior secondary, and 3 years of senior secondary education or high school. Senior secondary education is provided in a formal, and informal setup. Students entering senior secondary school can choose to attend either a more academically oriented school or a vocational school.

Formal senior secondary education comprises general education (sekolah menengah atas), vocational education (sekolah menengah kejuruan), Islamic senior secondary schools (madrasah aliyah) and Islamic vocational education (madrasah aliyah kejuruan).

Junior high school (Sekolah Menengah Pertama) lasts 3 years, after elementary school, although Some schools offer an accelerated learning program where excellent performers can complete the level in two years. There are also academic and vocational junior high schools that lead to senior-level diplomas.

Students with special needs or disabilities can opt to be enrolled in a separate school from the mainstream called Sekolah Luar Biasa (lit. Extraordinary School, SLB)
