Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary is a young institution with a long tradition. The university was established in its present form in 1993; however, its legal predecessors date back to 1839 and 1855.
It is founded on the traditions of Reformed education, yet the university is open to professional innovation. Our nearly 8000 students can conduct their studies at four faculties which are the following: Faculty of Law, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Social Studies and Health Sciences, and Faculty of Teacher Training.
The legal predecessor of our University was the Reformed Theological Academy of Budapest, founded in 1855 and granted University status by the Hungarian Parliament in 1900.
In 1993 the General Assembly of the Hungarian Reformed Church decided to establish a multi-faculty University, and this decision was approved later on in the year on 21st September by the Parliament of the Republic of Hungary.
Through the creation of Károli Gáspár University, the Hungarian Reformed Church has fulfilled the aims of its forefathers. Our University, in the spirit of the Universitas Scientiarum, aims to raise the status of not solely the Church, but also the nation, through its educational, teaching, and academic work.
The commitment of Károli Gáspár University is to carry on the distinguished traditions of the Reformed Colleges of Sárospatak (founded in 1531), Pápa (founded in 1531), Debrecen (founded in 1538), Kolozsvár (founded in 1622) and Nagyenyed (founded in 1632).
In addition to the education of ministers of religion, for academic research, training for the position of lecturer and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, and the awarding of degrees, its aims and objectives are to provide BA and MA level basic education in several fields and branches of scholarship and to be capable of carrying out academic research, following the aforementioned traditions and in the spirit of the Reformation.
Károli Gáspár University was established by the Reformed Church in Hungary. This reality is appropriately reflected in the official name of the foundation: Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary.
The university was named after Károli Gáspár, the Calvinist minister, who arranged the primary complete Hungarian interpretation of the Bible in 1590.
The college was set up in its present form in 1993 however its set of experiences attaches back to 1839. Other than Budapest, Károli Gáspár University has other campuses in the urban communities of Kecskemét and Nagykőrös.
Today, over 8,200 students enrolled for the 2020/2021 academic year at the University, available in 5 faculties, education and research activities are carried out by 15 institutes and 52 departments belong to the five faculties altogether.
There over 600 academic staff members teaching at 38 (BA, MA, single-cycle) degree programs. The school boats also of three doctoral schools in history, law, and theology that offer Ph.D. programs.
In terms of affiliations and partnerships, Károli Gaspar University maintains strong industrial, institutional, and organizational relationships with about 158 international partner institutions in 37 countries worldwide.
It’s a very strong ERASMUS+ exchange program welcome around 200 to 300 international exchange students to the university every year.
The school library is a citadel of scholastic learning, there are materials and resources both physical and electronic, to assist student education and training.
Károli Gáspár University boats more than 150,000 books are kept in the libraries of the university.
STUDENT LIFE AT KÁROLI GÁSPÁR UNIVERSITY
At a college level, the students of the Károli Gáspár University are spoken for by the Student Union (EHÖK). Károli Gáspár University has five student halls of residence providing over 500 spaces for students of the university. There is also the option of finding student housing outside the campus and within the city of Budapest. Students can either rent a one-bedroom or studio apartment or share a two-bedroom or three-bedroom apartment with other students.
This option is also quite safe and budget-friendly because the entire cost for the residence is split between two to four students.
Additionally, there are one-room private apartments or studios that one student can rent and live without help from anyone else.
These homes have kitchens and bathrooms as single units and are pricier relying upon the region or their vicinity. The costs of these houses rely upon how current or lavish they are.
