The cost of living in Hungary is very cheap compared to other countries in Europe, like France and Germany. Hungary offers quite a relatively cheap cost of living especially for students, a budget of around €300 to €500 should suffice for accommodation, books, and other utilities.

Noteworthy, the tuition fees in Hungary are quite modest going for around €1,000 to €3,000 per academic year. As with any other country, the general cost of living varies from one individual to the next and different lifestyle choices.

Accommodation: Students can get a good apartment for a good deal of 60,000 to 70,00 HUF, depending on the city that they live in.

Typically larger cities such as Budapest and Debrecen, have higher costs in rent than smaller cities, the cost of rent in larger cities can go up to 150,000 to 200,000 HUF (forint) for really nice apartments in very nice areas with luxury amenities.

There also apartments in suburban areas that go for lesser prices around 45,000 HUF to 50,000 HUF, the former being the minimum cost so far.

Feeding: The cost of feeding in Hungary is affordable through and through, students who opt to cook their meals spend considerably lesser than those who dine out or order in regularly.

Shopping for food items and preparing your meals will cost around 40,000 HUF for a month, and dining out will cost around 70,000 HUF to 80,000 HUF for a month as well.

Transportation: The cost of transportation is very cheap because students can purchase a monthly ticket for 2,500 HUF and the buses and trams are very effective and timely around the city. Interstate travels are also cost-effective with very streamlined train networks, the cost of a ticket is around 1,000 HUF to 2,000 HUF per trip.

Taxis are also a brilliant means of getting around the city as they are fast and easily available, however at peak times of the day they might be a bit pricier than normal. Taxi-hailing and ridesharing apps/services such as Uber and Bolt have a huge market in cities like Debrecen and Budapest and students find them very convenient.

Medical Insurance: Health insurance is very important in Hungary, international students from non-EU countries must be required to obtain medical insurance before they arrive and while they are living in the country.

The health insurance covers all medical costs and bills incurred while studying in Hungary, typically it costs approximately 10,000 HUF per month.

Utilities: The price for utilities such as gas, electricity, water, etc are quite seasonal, gas and electricity are lesser in summer months than in winter months. Utilities such range between 10,000 HUF to 20,000 HUF depending on the season, apartment size, and usage.

Other utilities such as internet and phone bills for a month cost around 2,500 and 6,000 for wireless internet service with top-speed and phone services that allow international calls.

*Please note that these values are just an estimate and shıuld serve as a pointer on what to expect while studying in Hungary, several factors such as exchange rates and student discounts can cause the prices to be higher or lower.
