International Black Sea University was established in 1995 in Tbilisi, Georgia and was opened by the second president of Georgia Eduard Shevardnadze and the former prime minister of Turkey Tansu Çiller in accordance with the decree of the Council of Ministers and the License of Opening given by the Ministry of Education of Georgia.
The university has created a multicultural, student-centered learning environment. High level of education is provided by local and international invited professors, educational programs focused on transferable skills and activities. The teaching process implies modern teaching methods and is based on the latest technologies. The role of modern technology and its impact on the employment market, as well as the need for analytical thinking, teamwork, decision-making, planning and prioritization are taken into account in the process of curriculum development and implementation. As a result, educational programs are focused on both – local and international employment market requirements. In terms of student and staff exchange, the university collaborates with leading universities of Europe, Asia and the US.
The University issues English-language international peer-reviewed journals in various fields of science twice a year. The editorial boards of journals are staffed by internationally recognized field specialists and researchers.
The university holds large scale international conferences in different fields of science every year. Leading field scholars participate in the conferences.
The university is involved in numerous international projects (Erasmus +, DAAD, Tempus, Vishegrad Fund, Black Sea Cross Boarder Cooperation) and is the recipient of numerous research grants from the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation.
In 2019, the International Black Sea University became a member of the Magna Charta Consortium, a globally recognized university association that brings together some of the world’s top 1000 universities.
The University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with almost 70 leading universities and organizations around the world.

Sport plays a huge role at International Black Sea University campus life. Students actively participate in football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, arm wrestling, chess, etc. Besides that, IBSU has professional sport teams too. Throughout the year, in both semesters, IBSU sports department host several team competitions in various sports programs.
