Visa Requirments

International students who have been accepted into French institutions can come to France with or without a visa depending on their country of origin. Students from the EU/EEA/Schengen/Nordic countries do not need a visa to come into France, there are agreements already in place that allows students from these countries to live and study in France under their European status for 3 months or less.

Study periods longer than 6 months would mean that the student must apply for residency status in France which usually lasts the duration of their program, this visa category is called VLT-TS (Visa de long séjour etudes). Some countries do not have visa restrictions for short-time study periods of 3 months or less, please check with the French immigration for the list of eligible countries or countries with visa exemptions.

Foreign students from other countries outside of the EU/EEA/Schengen countries require a visa to come into the country. The 3 visa classes in France for individuals from other countries include:

  • Visa de court séjour pour etudes (Short-term student visa for courses under 3 months or less)

  • Visa de long séjour temporaire pour etudes (Long-term temporary student visa for courses under 6 months )

  • Visa de long séjour etudes (Long-term student visas for durations longer than 6 months)

There is a visa fee of €50 for EEF applicants and €99 for non-EEF applicants

Depending on the country of origin, international students from 44 countries (listed on the website) must first register and apply for a student visa via ‘Campus France’, the French official national body for university education and foreign students. Students from these countries must make their applications via the EEF process, and still proceed to apply at the French embassy/consulate/collection center in their home country.

Students from other countries that do not need to apply under Campus France can proceed to make direct submissions and applications to the French embassy/Consulate in their country of residence.
