Different universities and colleges set their admission requirements for higher education courses, so they differ broadly. Depending on the course, students may be able to get into higher education with a variety of qualifications.

If you are applying to do a course, you may find that work experience is taken into consideration alongside any qualifications you have.

Some higher education institutes and colleges offer courses as a preparation for certain types of degrees. They usually do not result in a separate selection process as they simply qualify you to enter the degree program itself. Courses can be taught in a broad selection of fields of study.

Entry requirements

  • The minimum requirements for admission to a Bachelor programs are:
  • Ordinary and Advanced level result slips
  • Identification documents
  • Health Insurance
  • Health Report

The minimum requirements for admission to a PhD program are:

  • Ordinary and Advanced level result slips
  • Identification documents
  • Health Insurance
  • Health Report
  • A Bachelors degree with first or upper second class honours at level 8, including a research component compromised of a thesis; or
  • A Masters degree by course work with a GPA of 4 or above (FNU GPA equivalent) at level 9;
  • A Masters by Research degree in a relevant discipline at level 9; or
  • (d) Evidence of academic qualification and/or experience that satisfies the Higher Degree by Research Committee (HDRC) that the applicant has developed knowledge of the field of study or cognate field and has the potential for research that is sufficient to undertake the proposed programme.

The minimum requirements for admission to a Masters by Research Programme are:

  • Ordinary and Advanced level result slips
  • Identification documents
  • Health Insurance
  • Health Report
    • A Bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 4 or above (FNU GPA equivalent) at level 7; or
      (b) A graduate diploma with a GPA of 3.5 or above (FNU GPA equivalent) at level 8; or
    • A Masters by coursework at level 9; or
    • Evidence of academic qualification and/or experience that satisfies the HDRC that the applicant has developed knowledge of the field of study or cognate field and has the potential for research that is sufficient to undertake the proposed programme.

Important things to note for postgraduate programs:

A candidature confirmation within 8 months of enrolment is need and a completion seminar at the end of 18 months. Duration of the programme is 2 years full time and 4 years part-time. At the end of their completion seminar, the candidate can apply to upgrade from the masters to PhD studies. Masters by Research programmes are level nine programmes comprising a 40,000 to a 60,000-word thesis which must be the student’s own research work, embody the results of the research work undertaken by the student guided by two supervisors.
