About Fiji

Fiji, officially the Republic of Fiji, is an island country in Melanesia in the South Pacific Oceanic region. The country entails an archipelago of more than 332 islands, of which 110 are permanently inhabited, and more than 500 islets.

The country is one of the most developed economies in the Pacific realm due to an abundance of forest, mineral and fish resources. Today, the main sources of foreign exchange are its tourist industry and sugar exports.

The islands themselves are thought by many experts to have formed over one hundred million years ago as the result of volcanic eruptions. However, today the volcanos are largely dormant.

Climate

Christianity is the largest religion in the country with over 55% of residents practicing most of those are Methodist or Roman Catholic. However, even today over 33 percent of Fijians, many with an Indian heritage practice some form of Hindu.

All adults should try the kava, a fermented root drink at least a couple of times. It makes the tongue and mouth go numb for a few seconds after just a sip.

About Fiji's Economy

The country has a market economy based primarily on tourism and agriculture, the latter including a substantial subsistence sector dominated by indigenous Fijians.

Subsistence farmers earn supplementary cash income from cultivating copra, cocoa, kava, taro pineapples, cassava, or bananas or from fishing. The country has a wide economic outlook!

The commercial sector is heavily based on garment manufacturing and on sugarcane, which, for the most part, is produced by independent Indian farmers.

To continue its positive trajectory in the moderately free rankings, the government will need to prioritize policies to lower tariffs, ease investment restrictions, and privatize state-owned enterprises. Additional measures to curb corruption are essential.

The country’s economic freedom score is 63.4, making its economy the 77th freest in the 2020 Index. Its overall score has increased by 1.2 points, primarily because of a higher government integrity score.

Fiji is ranked 15th among 42 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, and its overall score is slightly above the regional and world averages.

The country’s economy has earned a spot in the moderately free category for the fourth year in a row. GDP development during the same period has also been progressing at a respectable rate, partly reflecting the normalization of agricultural and tourism export earnings following 2016’s Cyclone Winston.

The Fijian economy also has a strong service and light-industrial component serving small neighbouring countries as well as the country. Activities range from boatbuilding (especially fishing boats and pleasure craft) to brewing and paint productions.

The government offers incentives (including residence) for investors but insists on potential for job creation and training programs for native employees. Sugar production is concentrated on the western side of Viti Levu and in the area around Labasa.

The government-controlled Fiji Sugar Corporation has a monopoly on milling and marketing.

The European Union (EU) is the biggest market for Fiji’s sugar; Fiji has had preferential trade agreements with the EU, such as the 1975 Lome Convention (which expired in 2000) and the subsequent Cotonou Agreement (2000).

For much of Fiji’s postindependence period, sugar was Fiji’s largest export, accounting for more than half of all exports.
