Shopping in Dominica

Find Programs
(Bachelor's, Master's & PhD)

Let's be honest! Studying abroad comes in handy with a good shopping culture! Everyone wants to get time to explore markets and pick a few goodies to add to the cart list! Shopaholics welcome to Dominica, the land of beauty and charming crafts!

This is where your shopping impulse is put to the test. With numerous shopping malls, stalls, shops, and supermarkets Dominica will certainly take thy breath away!

The country is a duty-free port, but its shopping scene is not as well-known as those of other Caribbean islands. However, you can still buy tax-free products like jewelry, sunglasses, clothing, and tobacco at relatively low prices.

You can also purchase top-end quality local handicrafts like hand-woven rugs, bags and hats made from wild banana strands and vetiver grass. Some of the most notable Island items are bags made using two-layer reeds which get their color from being buried underground.

You can find these unique items at the Carib Reserve Crafts Center.

The island nation is popular for its diverse selection of handmade products, which are sold by local merchants throughout the country. The Carib Indian Territory is the ideal place to visit to purchase baskets, hand-painted shirts, wood carvings, screw-pine tableware, pottery, and natural soaps. Groceries and produce like jellies, jams, rum, sauces, coffee, and medicinal herbs are also popular buys.

There are many shops around Roseau. Be sure to check the famous Old Market Plaza, which was a once a slave trading post, but is now a handicrafts plaza. There are vegetable stalls every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday morning and foreigners are encouraged to support the local farmers.

There are no big shopping malls or complexes in the island. Most stores on the island are open Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. On the weekends, shopping hours are greatly reduced, closed all day on Sunday and Saturday only from 8:00 a.m. till afternoon.

If you are looking for a unique shopping experience, then rest assured that the premier shopping malls are usually located in the heart of the commercial district, generally just a short journey from your accommodation.

While you are there you are likely to find yourself enjoying the company of locals, who visit the luxury malls to unwind, spend time together and tour the shops at their leisure.

"I enjoy shopping and I found it affordable but some of the clothes are definitely not of the highest quality." - Hassan from Turkey
