Basic education in Djibouti consists of 9 years and aims at developing the students’ basic knowledge, and contribute to the gradual development of their intellectual, physical, and moral autonomy. Of the 9 years of basic education, 5 years are spent at primary school.

Primary education is a five-year program, from the age of 6 to the age of 11 to 12 years. There are about 81 public primary schools and about 24 registered private primary schools in Djibouti.

Curriculum- the primary school curriculum in Djibouti offers a variety of subjects including English first Language, Second Language (French or Arabic), Social Science, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education, Reading, Writing, Art, Music, Technology, Languages Other Than English, and Cultural Studies, to mention but a few.

In primary school, students will gradually proceed and automatically progress to the next stages, grade by grade, students will be continuously assessed at each stage in terms of performance. They will then progress to the next 4 grades of compulsory education.
