Did you know that:

• Formerly known as Zaire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a Central African nation that is characterised by political civil unrest. Well, all this in hthe past, which helps to mask the true beauty of this unknown gem.

• The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 2nd largest country in Africa. It borders 9 countries, namely Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

• The people of the DRC represent over two hundred ethnic groups, with nearly two hunderd and fifty languages and dialects spoken throughout the country. Kinshasa, the capital, is the second largest French-speaking city in the world.

• The country is among the most resource-rich countries on the planet, with an abundance of gold, tantalum, tungsten, and tin; all minerals used in electronics such as cell phones and laptops – yet it continues to have an extremely poor population.

• Despite its troubles, the DRC is actually one of the continent’s most thrilling natural escapes. Lush rainforests, majestic rivers, volcanos, chimpanzee sanctuaries and more await visitors to the Congo once tensions subsides

• Virunga the oldest of the country’s national parks, this is where you can experience the amazing world of African wildlife at its finest. This sprawling 7,800 square kilometre park has a plethora of alluring landscapes to tour. From forest to swamp, savanna to lava plain, erosion valley to active volcano, the park has a new terrain, complete with exciting new discoveries, waiting at every turn.

• Of a world population of about 1,000 mountain gorillas, roughly a third are in DRC. At 5am, scouts go out to locate them, and after an early breakfast of fruit, French toast and local honey washed down with rich Congolese tea, we have a briefing from the rangers: put on face masks when encountering the gorillas to spare them the risk of infection; keep seven metres away; don’t use a flash.

• DRC is besieged by butterflies a thick vegetation. It is a warm, humid hike along the fertile ground.

About Democratic Republic of Congo's Economy

The DRC’s economic freedom score is 49.5, making its economy the 162nd freest in the 2020 Index. Its overall score has decreased by 0.8 point because of a huge drop in the government integrity score.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is ranked 39th among 47 countries in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, and its overall score is well lower than the regional and world averages.

At independence in 1960, the formal economy of DRC was based almost entirely on the extraction of minerals, primarily copper and diamonds. Most of this economic activity was controlled by foreign companies, such as the Belgian Union Minière du Haut-Katanga, whose assets in 1965 were valued at nearly $430 million.

By that time, UMHK was one of the largest single sources of Congolese governmental revenue and accounted for a large proportion of the country’s foreign exchange earnings.

Domestic agriculture is the main source of food and income for the majority of the population. Agriculture, animal husbandry, fishing, and forestry synchronised provide employment for more than three-fourths of the labour force and, on average, account for more than two-fifths of GDP.

Although the country is rich in agricultural potential, deterioration of the transportation network and agricultural products since independence have led to a return to subsistence agriculture and a collapse of market production.

Foodstuffs such as cereals and fish are imported in increasing amounts. Coffee is the chief agricultural export, although much of it is smuggled out of the country; production of palm oil, rubber, and cotton, once mainstays of the export economy, has become almost negligible.

In the humid equatorial region, cassava and rice are the basic food crops. Peanuts (groundnuts), oil palms, and fruit trees are also important, while robusta coffee is the main cash crop.

In the eastern highlands, yams, beans, and sweet potatoes are used as food crops, while arabica coffee and tea are export commodities. Corn, an important subsistence crop, is grown widely but chiefly centred on the southeast. Vegetable growing is widespread throughout Congo.

Livestock and poultry are kept in every province. Cattle are raised mainly in the east and the south. Pigs are kept in the west and sheep in the eastern highlands. Other domestic animals include chickens, geese, pigeons, and rabbits. Commercial meat production is limited, however, and the country depends upon imports to fulfill its requirements.

The country’s main economic resource is its mineral deposits; mining produces almost nine-tenths of total exports. The abundance of minerals in Katanga province was among those factors that attracted European powers to Congo in the 19th century.

DRC’s forest reserves cover more than half of the country and are among the largest in Africa. Wild game supplements the local diet and is an important item in local commerce. Rivers, lakes, swamps, and ocean contain vast reserves of fish.
