About Curaçao

The ‘C’ of the ABC Netherlands Antilles group in the southern Caribbean, Curacao (pronounced cure-a-sow) is a common year-round destination for sun-seekers. It does not have the best beaches in the Caribbean, but the island’s great weather, superb scuba diving, and Dutch charm are reason enough to travel.

Curacao has many things going for it, not least its beaches, which are close to the main town and on the properties of many big hotels and motels. Water sports are low-key, although there’s excellent windsurfing and diving, and you can snorkel over the reefs. The beaches are great for families, couples and singletons, with quiet ones in the north.

The prime of sightseeing is the pleasant capital, Willemstad, which is best known for its low-rise skyline of colorful harbor front buildings. There is a common floating market, along with an antique floating bridge and several forts. Willemstad can mostly be identified on foot and is within walking distance from the main beaches of Mambo and Kontiki.

The country has good hotels, most being mid-range to top-end and residing on or near a beach. They typically come with good restaurants and lively entertainment, and sometimes spas and casinos for entertainment. The distinct culture has taught the island an awesome compliment of cuisines, while the nightlife is the busiest in this part of the Caribbean.

The shopping here is intriguing and consists of an entire duty-free section tailored to the thousands of visiting cruise passengers, along with rows of boutiques and souvenirs shops for clothing and crafts. Value wise, the country is on par with Aruba and Bonaire for eating out, shopping and accommodation, but you get slightly more for your money here than anywhere else in the Bahamas.

Boat trips around the island are common, from deep-sea fishing charters to cruises to nearby Klein. Aruba and Bonaire are also within reach by boat or thirty-minute shuttle flight, while Curacao itself has plenty to entice those with itchy feet. Christoffel National Park is a sizeable, hilly place of the north with hiking and caves, plus the island has good horseback riding potential.

Direct flights come in from around the Caribbean and the United States, Canada, Europe and South America. Major cruises also call on Willemstad. While not big, Curacao doesn’t have the most comprehensive transport network. Most tourists rely on taxis and buses for getting around, while car rental is reasonably priced and the driving simple.

About the economy of Curacao

Most of Curacao's GDP comes from services. Tourism, petroleum refining and bunkering, offshore finance, and transportation and communications are the majors of this small island economy, which is closely tied to the outside world. The country has limited natural resources, poor soil, and inadequate water supplies, and budgetary problems complicate reform of the health and education systems. Although GDP bounced only slightly during the past decade, Curacao enjoys a high per capita income and a well-developed infrastructure compared to other countries in the region.

Curacao has a great natural harbor that can accommodate large oil tankers, and the port of Willemstad hosts a free trade zone and a dry dock. Venezuelan state-owned oil company PdVSA, under a contract in effect until 2019, leases the single refinery on the island from the government, directly employing over a thousand people. Most of the oil for the refinery is imported from Venezuela and most of the refined items are exported to the US and Asia. Almost all consumer and capital goods are imported, with the United States, the Netherlands, and Venezuela being the major suppliers.

The government is attempting to diversify its industry and common trade. Curacao is an Overseas Countries and Territories of the European Union. Nationals of Curacao are citizens of the EU, even though it is not a member. Based on its OCT status, products that originate in Curacao have preferential access to the European Union and are exempt from import duties. Curacao is a beneficiary of the Caribbean Basin Initiative and, as a result, products originating in Curacao can be imported tax free into the United States if at least 35% has been added to the value of these products in Curacao.

The island has state-of-the-art ICT connectivity with the rest of the world, including a Tier IV datacenter. With several direct satellite and submarine optic fiber cables, Curacao has one of the best Internet speeds and reliability in the Western Hemisphere.
