At the age of six to seven years, children start primary school education, which lasts 6 years. Primary education lasts five years in most parts of the country, except in major cities including Beijing or Shanghai, where a 6-year-long primary school system is used, usually starting at the age of 6 years. The complete primary education, the students will sit for mandatory exams which will test their knowledge in Chinese and maths. There are international primary schools that teach foreign curricula, while Chinese schools follow the national curriculum.
