Secondary education in chad last for 7 years and is made up of 2 levels, The first level being a four-year study leading to the Brevet d'Etudes du Premier Cycle or the Junior High School Diploma (BEPC), and the senior secondary level or high school which is a university preparation course lasting three years.

On completion, successful students will be awarded the baccalaureate and can proceed and apply for university education. There is a relatively small number of children who enter secondary schools in Chad.

General secondary education in chad admits students who will have succeeded in primary school and obtained the  Certificat d'Etudes Elementaire et Primaire Tchadien (CEPE). This is the school leaving certificate and gateway examination and a requirement for all children who wish to enter secondary education.

Students who are not accepted into secondary schools have the option to proceed to study in technical fields at vocational or technical schools. Upon completion of technical schooling, Successful students will be awarded the Certificat d'Aptitude Professionelle, and the Baccalaureat de Technicien depending on their chosen fields.

At general secondary school, students may choose from four different combinations or subject groups that will define their future professional orientations. These subject groups include humanities, economics, maths, or natural sciences. Secondary education in Chad includes a lower division (premier cycle) with 4 levels and a higher division (second cycle) with 3 levels. Upon completion of high school, students will be awarded the Baccalaureat de l'Enseignement Supérieur.
