You get to explore the world, experience a new culture, dive into a world-class education and prepare for the global job future. Nothing exceeds the immersive international experience you’ll get while studying abroad in Cambodia.
Most interns in Cambodia head straight to the temples around Siem Reap in the northwest, home to the famous Angkor Wat, or to the historical spots of the capital, Phnom Penh, with its Royal Palace and lively nightlife.
The kingdom, however, has many more activities to do than meets the eye. On your vacation you get the chance to head north to the cool climates of Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri to trek mountains and waterfalls.
Along the way, visit the almost extinct Irrawaddy dolphin and bathe former working elephants at a preservation. The Kingdome has just about anything for everyone to experience an extravagance.
All of the country’s major destinations house a bounty of tour operators able to assist your students around this colorful country and provide you a diligent history of what you’re seeing.
Whether you plan to visit a handful of sites in one day or spend a leisurely week exploring them all, temple-hopping outside of Siem Reap is a real fascination.
From the behemoth Angkor Wat, the largest religious spots in the world, to the long lost jungle temples made famous by Laura Croft, the area which was once the stronghold of the Khmer Empire has them all.
RocApply tour partners organize a number of trips around Angkor temples, varying in length. You get insights about Cambodia’s northeastern heartland, where you can discover life on the great river.
Whether kayaking through the flooded jungles, trekking to forgotten ancient sites, or coming face to face with the almost extinct Irrawaddy dolphin near Kratie, eco tours offer a lifetime experience in the real Kingdom style.
Did you know that the Cambodia’s bamboo train is perhaps one of the most exhilarating, unconventional train journeys in Asia? Called a norry in Cambodian circles, this train is constructed completely from bamboo and wood, complete with a gasoline engine, and can accommodate around fifteen passengers.
Although Cambodia only has a one-track line, genuine trains are few and far between, and amble along at a snail’s pace, giving you enough time to really get to know your fellow riders. Universities can arrange these unique trips.
About Cambodia
A mystical country of shimmering temples, picturesque paddy fields, and grisly history, the Southeast Asian Kingdom of Cambodia has ascended from the dust of decades of genocide and civil war to become one of the region’s most vibrant and most diverse tourist destinations.
This country is most famous for being home to the world’s largest religious structure, Angkor Wat. Cambodia’s breathtaking temple is a representation of national pride and even features on the country’s flag, which is the only national flag on any structure.
Since the country reopened its borders in the 1990s, thousands of tourists have flocked to explore what is surely one of the world’s greatest architectural feats.
In the energetic capital, Phnom Penh, once referred to as the Pearl of Asia, you will be both intrigued and humbled by the sights the city has to offer, from the gleaming gold peaks of the astounding royal palace, to the harrowing, blood-stained walls of the Khmer Rouge prison in Tuol Sleng.
While this country has carved a reputation over the last decade as a backpacker haven, the main hubs of Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville now cater to the accommodation needs of most students studying here from abroad, with a particular shift in focus recently to high-end and boutique resorts.
Phnom Penh, specifically, offers a wide variety of restaurants, bars, and local cocktail gardens providing food and drink at reasonable cost compared to those found in other Asian big cities.
In the quieter provincial locations, Western influence still surge and you get a true feel for how Southeast Asia once appeared and spanned. Go deep enough and you may be the first barang, a Cambodian expression referring to a stranger, face a local has seen.
Better still, you may be welcome to share a dish of prahok, a pungent paste made with fermented fish and salt, and a bottle of home-brewed rice wine.
In fact, most of Cambodia’s most enticing activities are located outside of the capital. Set on the coast, a ninety-minute drive from the capital, are the massively French-influenced towns of Kampot and Kep.
The optimal way to discover these sleepy towns is to rent a motorcycle in Kampot and cruise along the promenade, which is lined with faded French villas and quaint riverside cafes, before embarking on the winding drive through the paddy fields towards the seaside retreat of Kep.
Remember to…
• Wake up early to witness Angkor Wat in all its glamor, as the sun creeps up from behind, creating an awe-inspiring atmosphere throughout the ancient complexity
• Tour the Kep’s renowned seafood market and indulge in favorite local crab and Kampot pepper dishes
• Trek through the breathtaking country outside of Cambodia’s second city, Battambang, on a motorcycle
• Watch the early evening hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh life pass by from a riverside balcony, beer in hand
About Cambodia's Economy
We value your itinerary! This is evidenced by the services we offer students who intend to study abroad right onto our website! We have transitioned from traditional agents that will only focus on the application process (which we do offer for free) to help the student appreciate more about their desired study abroad country.
To this aid, we have made this guide to share with you the economic performance of Cambodia to strengthen your research for the study abroad decision you made!
Over the past recent years, the country has undergone a significant transition, reaching lower middle-income status in 2015 and aspiring to attain upper middle-income status by 2030.
Driven by garment exports and tourism, Cambodia’s economy has sustained an average development rate of 8% between 1998 and 2018, making it one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.
While easing slightly, growth remained strong, estimated to have reached 7.1% in 2019, after the better-than-expected growth rate of 7.5% in 2018
The global shock triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted Asian countries, Cambodia’s economy in 2020 at a time when Cambodia faced the partial suspension of preferential access to the EU market under the “Everything but Arms” initiative.
The outbreak caused sharp deceleration in most of Cambodia’s main engines of development in the first quarter of 2020, including weakened tourism and construction activity. Growth was projected to slow sharply to 2.5 percent in 2020 under the baseline scenario.
Poverty continues to fall in the country. According to official estimates, the poverty rate in 2014 was 13.5% compared to 47.8% in 2007. About 90% of the poor live in the countryside.
While Cambodia achieved in 2009 the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of reducing poverty, the vast majority of families who escaped poverty did so by a small margin.
Around 4.5 million people remain near-poor, vulnerable to falling back into poverty when opened to economic and other external shocks. Health and education, especially quality, remain important challenges and development priorities.
The country has made considerable strides in improving maternal and child health, early childhood development, and primary education in rural areas.
The maternal mortality ratio per 100,000 live births decreased from 472 in 2005 to 170 in 2014; the under-five mortality rate decreased from 83 per 1000 live births in 2005 to 35 per 1000 live births in 2014; and infant mortality rate decreased from 66 per 1000 live births in 2005 to 28 per 1,000 live births in 2014.
Despite the progress in health and education outcomes, human capital indicators lag behind lower middle-income countries. A child born in Cambodia today will be only 49% as productive when grown as she/he could be if she/he enjoyed full quality education, good health, and proper nutrition during childhood.
An estimated 1 in 3 children under the age of five suffer from stunting and only 36% of children between three and five years old are enrolled in early education.
Key reforms are needed for Cambodia to sustain pro-poor growth, foster competitiveness, sustainably manage natural resource inputs and improve access to and quality of public services.
The country continues to have a serious infrastructure gap and would benefit from greater connectivity and investments in rural and urban infrastructure.
Further diversification of the economy will demand fostering entrepreneurship, and building new skills to address emerging labor market needs. And quality of human capital will be of utmost importance to achieve Cambodia’s ambitious goal of reaching middle-income status by 2030.
