Bhutan Visa Requirements for international students

Bhutanese policy ensures that only a limited number of tourists enter the country at any one time. The following groups are exempt from a Bhutanese Visa: Citizens of  India do not need a visa to enter Bhutan.

They can obtain entry into Bhutan by air and land and may use any of the acceptable documents including the Indian Passport, Aadhar card, Voter ID card with photograph.

Citizens of Bangladesh and the Maldives do not need a visa provided they have a passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry. Diplomatic, service, and official passport holders from Switzerland (90 days), and Thailand (90 days) do not require a visa to visit Bhutan for up to 90 days.

All foreigners must obtain a visa before visiting Bhutan and may only enter Bhutan through Phuntsholing, Gelephu, and Samdrup Jongkhar if coming by land or Paro if coming by air. If approved, they are given a visa clearance letter and must present it at the port of entry. The visa is then stamped into their passport.

To be eligible for or to apply for a Bhutan Visa the following are a prerequisite.

  • must have a passport that is valid for at least six months
  • must have a Diplomatic passport-if the traveler is a Diplomat
  • Have an acceptance letter from the enrolling university.
  • They must also have a plane ticket and a transit visa, depending on location.
  • Students also have to show proof of funds to cover their trip.
  • Proof of approved accommodation booking
  • Recently taken passport size photographs.
  • Routine vaccination certificates.
  • Letter of invitation, for study in Bhutan and business visa.
  • Contact details, and next of kin details or those of contact person in Bhutan.
  • Original copy of the Travel Documents (e.g. Passport)
  • 1 Passport Photo (white background, 1.5 inches)
