About Belize

The Mayans realized very early on the value of establishing their territory in the region of modern day Belize. With the Caribbean Sea on one side and the lush jungle of Central American on the other end, tiny Belize offers the best of all worlds in a nice tidy wrap.

From clambering around barely uncovered Mayan temples to exploring the beaches of a myriad of islets, you can have an adventure with plenty of relaxing hammock time more so.

This country was once the heartland of the Mayan empire, so a day or two wandering around the Mayan ruins are a top priority on most travelers’ agendas. There are plenty on hand, from accessible Altun Ha to the major town of Caracol.

The long and lovely coastline of Belize is another top attraction, with hundreds of atolls and cayes like Ambergris and Caulker where local life drools to a drip. In between are the majestic nature reserves where jaguars are rescued and the birdlife is out of the earth.

Belize is not a place for urban pleasures, but if nature and ancient empires get you rolling, this country rarely fails to impress. The tiny population of the country is made up of a mosaic of ethnic groups, from Afro-Caribbeans to Mayans.

It is arguably the friendliest country in Central American, with the exception of Costa Rica perhaps. The locals know they have a good thing going and understand the pertinence of protecting their natural resources, while still catering to the visitors that fuel the economy.

The cuisine is a refreshing fusion of seafood, red beans, rice and fruit, with great restaurants in all the main towns. While not a budget travel region, Belize provides excellent value in every department.

The compact size of Belize makes it perfect for creating a diverse and interesting itinerary with only a few days to polish up. It is easy to hop between Mayan ruins, national parks and beachside resort spots.

The jungle trekking is beautiful, as is the bird watching and other nature activities. Scuba divers will be in awe of the range of dive spots found along hundreds of atolls and boaters will have a full menu of river adventure from lazy tubing to the third white water rapids.

Moving around the country is as easy as it gets in Central America. A solid domestic air network enables you to jump from the jungle to the beach in under an hour any day of the week. Along the coast, express water taxis zip between most of the islands and atolls along the Caribbean coastline for a fun form of transport.

Back on land, the local bus system can get you to even the tiniest village in that relaxed frame of mind that permeates the Belizean community.

About Belize's Economy

The knowledge of economic performance for a given country can serve a long way in choosing which country to pick for a semester abroad! To this aid, we have made sure you keep well-informed through our Belize Economy guide what entails domestic and foreign income here.

The information is overall but you may need to read more on the reviews from trusted sources to gain a deeper understanding of the economic performance.

Coastal and marine ecosystems give vitally important goods and services to countries in the Caribbean. This guide looks at only three out of the many culturally and economically valuable services provided by these ecosystems in Belize.

Belize’s coral reefs and mangrove-lined coasts provide critical protection against erosion and wave-induced damages from tropical rains; they have supported artisanal fishing communities for generations; and they stand at the center of vibrant tourism industry, drawing snorkelers, divers and sport fishermen from all over the world to boost the economy.

Coral reef and mangrove associated tourism contributed an estimated US$150 million to $196 million to the national economy in 2007 (12 percent to 15 percent of GDP). Fishing is an important economical tradition, as well as a safety net and livelihood for many coastal Belizeans.

Annual economic benefits from reef and mangrove dependent fisheries is estimated at between US$14–16 million. Reefs and mangroves also protect coastal properties from erosion and wave-induced damage, providing an estimated US$231 to US$347 million in avoided damages per year.

By comparison, Belize’s GDP in 2007 was US$1.3 billion. These estimates capture only three of the many services offered by coral reefs and mangroves, and should not be considered the “total” value of these resources.

These numbers should be regarded as a lower bound estimate. Despite their importance, these benefits are frequently overlooked or underappreciated in coastal investment and policy formulation.

Unchecked coastal development, overfishing, and pressures from tourism threaten the country’s reefs, with the additional threats of warming seas, fiercer storms, and other climate-related changes looming on the horizon.

Fish populations, including commercially valuable sport-fishing species and colorful reef fish, will diminish if they lose the mangrove forests they rely upon as critical nursery habitats.

Coastal properties will become increasingly important to storms and erosion, and reef-related tourism will suffer as reefs and mangroves decline. Belize’s government, NGOs, and private sector have started to recognize the importance of coastal ecosystems to the economy.

Belize has a developing free-market economy. Commercial logging and the export of timber were for years the basis of the Belizean economy, but by 1960 the combined value of sugar and citrus exports had exceeded that of timber.

Because of the destruction of forests and price fluctuations of traditional export products, Belize had opened up its economy to nontraditional agricultural items and manufacturing activities by the end of the 20th century.

Tourism is a major source of foreign currency, partly as a result of an increase in cruise ship arrivals. Only a small proportion of the country’s land is actively used for agriculture, which employs about one-fifth of the population.

Most farms are smaller than 100 acres (40 ha), and many of them are milpas (temporary forest clearings). On most of these farms, traditional shifting cultivation is practiced, largely because of the nutrient-poor soils of the lowlands.

The remaining farms or plantations are dedicated to the raising of crops for export, such as sugarcane, citrus fruits, and bananas.
