Study in Bahrain

Welcome to RocApply Bahrain! While Bahrain was perhaps the first Gulf state to open up to expats and holidaymakers back in the 1970’s, it has not felt the need to follow the same path as its more exuberant neighbor, Dubai.

Indeed, this tiny island in the Persian Gulf has retained the same charm that first made it so attractive to foreigners. But at the same time, it is a thoroughly modern oasis of the Middle East that caters to all beauty.

Originally a sleepy pearling island, Bahrain grew as its region grew in geopolitical prominence even though it possesses very little oil of its own. Its tolerant, permissive monarchy and the laid-back nature of its inhabitants combined to make it an attractive destination for R ‘n’ R among the region’s oil workers.

Today, it is seen as a place for residents of Dubai, Qatar, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia to escape for a long weekend, while those from abroad are arriving in increasing numbers to take advantage of its facilities, weather and academic environment.

With a Mediterranean climate that lasts eight months of the year, most foreigners come to Bahrain to kiss the sun. While it is true that the lion’s share of tourists rarely leave the wide range of beautifully assorted hotels and resorts, there is much else to do on this historic island. From the high-octane glamour of the annual Formula 1 Grand Prix, to the charm of the historic quarter of Manama, Bahrain’s capital, to water sports, desert driving and restaurant hopping, the kingdom has wonderful sites in abundance.

Over the last twenty years, Bahrain has undergone an explosion of four- and five-star resorts with no end to the hospitality they offer. All the big names are here, with each vying to outdo the rest for facilities and refreshment.

At the other end of the spectrum, the island boasts a decent number of more homey lodging, from apartments to heritage hotels for your weekend expereinces. While there isn’t much in the way of local cuisine, regional Arab food is ubiquitous and there is a wide range of international restaurants available in tourist spots.

Almost all visitors will arrive at Bahrain International Airport, although those coming from Saudi Arabia can do so via the Causeway, a bridge that connects the two. The local airline, Gulf Air, is very well connected across the world, and most international carriers have Bahrain on their plans.

Students are flowing annually to this amazing region every year for a study abroad. When you are a fan of water bounded nations then this country would make the best destination for you by all margins!

About Bahrain

Bahrain is an island nation tucked away in the Middle East in an archipelago in the Persian Gulf region. This location east of Saudi Arabia is near many influential Middle Eastern nations.

The warm climate and mild winters make it an appealing place to study abroad for those who wish to avoid cold, harsh winters. Those who know Bahrain know it for its oil and natural gas reserves, although unlike much of the Persian Gulf, Bahrain does not rely on oil to drive its economy.

This Island nation is also a popular place to fish and has an abundant supply of pearls. Over 1.3 million people call Bahrain home, and over 55% of the population is made up of immigrants. It also draws over 8 million foreigners every year who come to the island to enjoy its historic sties, beaches and natural natural wonders.

The kingdom’s biggest attractions are either in Manama or out among the city’s bounding land and aquatic nature areas. Because of Bahrain’s small size, all places are easily and quickly accessible by public transport.

The capital of Bahrain is a small and atmospheric place and, unlike many of its Gulf neighbors, its residents thoroughly enjoy walking around the town’s squares in the evenings, when Manama really comes alive.

Because of Bahrain’s culture of hospitality and tourism, both the city and the outlying areas have a wealth of attractions and activities, and finding something enjoyable to do is very easy, even at short glimpse. Here are some wonders here;

Portuguese Fort

Known locally as Qal’at al Bahrain, this original fort dates back three millennia, although its current construction was built around the 16th century by Portuguese traders during a period when they controlled much of the Indian Ocean. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005, the archaeological finds discovered on the site reveal a great deal about the history of ancient Bahrain.

Bahrain National Museum

With over 6,000 years of local history, the Bahrain National Museum is filled in a great deal of interest in an elegant, post-modern architect. A large portion of the displays are dedicated to the Dilmuns, a civilization that had ties to ancient Mesopotamia, while the rest of the museum is devoted to the island after the arrival of Islam up to the discovery of oil. Also recounted in the history of pearl fishing, a recreation of a traditional souk, and several gallery spaces for art and sculptures.

Al Fatih Mosque

This grand mosque is popular for its enlightening guides and is a great place to learn about Islam, the religion of Bahrain, in breathtaking surroundings. The largest building in the country, Al Fatih is a modern structure that was built in 1984 and can hold up to 7,000 devotees. The materials used to build it were imported from all around the globe the marble from Italian, the glass from Austria, and the teak wood from India which were hand-carved by local craftsmen.

Tree of Life

Residents of the island nation have been fixated on the Tree of Life for generations. Legend has it that this 32-foot Prosopis cineraria is 500 years old, but when you see the surrounding geography standing atop a 25-foot sandy hill bounded by barren desert, it is hard to imagine how it began to be in the first place, as its source of water is unknown. It’s the only tree within a sizeable area, and over 50,000 foreigners arrive each year to make sure it is still protecting the region.

About Bahrain's Economy

You do not have worry anymore about the economic performance information for your country of study abroad choice. RocApply dedicates this guide to inform you on the facts you need to know about the economy of Bahrain! Let’s get started!

Economic Summary

The Kingdom of Bahrain represented by the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority has always stressed on the importance of shifting the tourism sector to be one of the main contributors to the economy.

The country implemented measures that aim to increase the sector’s current contribution to the GDP to reach 10% by year 2025, in an aim to implement the government’s vision towards diversifying the economy of non-oil sectors and to highlight the Kingdom of Bahrain as a regional and global tourism hub.

The Kingdom has witnessed a significant improvement in the Tourism sector between 2015-2016 demonstrated by the increase in the number of visitors to Bahrain from 11.6 million visitors in 2015 to 12.3 million visitors in 2016, registering an annual growth rate of 6%.

There was also an hike in the ratio of the number of hotel guests, which rose from 1.2 million guests to 1.3 million, recording an increase of 5 percent. The rise in the key indicators had a positive impact on the rate of tourist residency, recording an annual rise of 21.7% to reach 2.8 days from its previously recorded 2.3 days.

Overall growth was projected to remain at an average of 2.1% over 2019-2020, and non-oil growth will slow to 2.4%, due to front-loaded FBP fiscal measures and tapering megaproject investments.

Growth was aimed to resume in outer years as efficiency gains from reforms materialize. The country’s Inflation was expected to increase to 3% in 2019-2020, given the imposition of the VAT in 2019 and additional proposed energy tariff hikes.

Consumer spending and increased investment in the ALBA aluminum plant expansion supported an overall estimated growth of 2% in the last two years. The government Fiscal Balance program (FBP), announced in 2018, accompanied by US$10 billion in GCC financial support intends to alleviate financing constraints in the aftermath of 2014 oil price shock.

Key challenges facing Bahrain include the need to fully implement the FBP reforms. Bahrain will need to pursue energy subsidy reform and control large off-budget expenditures, while pursuing its diversification plan.

While regional financial support has greatly reduced near-term pressures, risks to the outlook are on the downside. Despite the flexibility provided by the GCC3 package, the country will face implementation constraints.

A key constraint is the limited room for budgetary expenditure cuts to achieve big returns, since they will largely need to come from reducing social spending. The second constraint relates to off-budget expenditures, which contribute around 5%points to the overall deficit and may be difficult to cut.

Third, the plan will need to be more ambitious on non-oil revenue generation.-The WorldBank 2019
