About Armenia

Did you know that it’s been more than 25 years since Armenia gained independence from the Soviet Union, and to mark the occasion RocApply has unearthed a few things you probably didn't know about the country?

Besides being home to the world's oldest winery there is a lot more to explore this amazing country. At least that’s what the archaeologists claim: in 2011 they found what is thought to be the oldest winery on the planet, found, of all regions, in a cave near the village of Areni.

This country has wrongly been overlooked as a go-to destination for tourists, but if you visit, you will find a rich cultural heritage where ancient sights and delicious food are plenty.

Throw in the friendly atmosphere (and copious opportunities for extreme activities) and it’s clear that the country’s reputation is due for a change. This country is outstanding in many ways than you would expect. We have made this guide to educate you on the beauty of Armenia!

Did you know that Armenia was the first country in the world that adopted Christianity as a national religion? This occurred in 301 AD with the assistance of Gregory the Illuminator and Armenian king Trdat III.

The country began the destruction of pagan temples and the construction of Christian cathedrals. The very first was the Echmiadzin Cathedral, which became the first Christian cathedral in the world.

You can see this magnificent building in the town of Echmiadzin, the religious center of all Armenians. Today, religious monuments of Christianity can be seen everywhere throughout the country

Here are some other interesting facts about Armenia you probably didn’t know!

• Christianity spread to the now-defunct Kingdom of Armenia soon after the death of Christ, though it took until the early 4th century for it to be adopted as the state religion. Still, that was earlier than any other place on the planet. From millennia-old monasteries to crumbling buildings, Armenia is scattered with Christian places of worship: they don’t call this the “land of holies” for nothing. It’s impossible to identify the best basilica in the land, but one of our favorites is the 9th-century Tatev Monastery; a stunning building in an area of unremitting charm.

• The country is the ancestral homeland of Cher, Andre Agassi, and Serj Tankian, the frontman of the American metal band, System of a Down, one of the groups at the forefront of publicizing the injustices of the Armenian Genocide.

• The events of 1915 forced millions of Armenians to flee abroad, where they established strong societies in the US, Russia, and France. They're thought to be some 5.6 million people of Armenian descent living abroad, which is bigger than the population of Armenia (3 million).

• There’s a widely-held belief in Armenia that the Ark of Noah is embedded in ice atop Mount Ararat. Despite many expeditions, said ark has never been located, but that doesn’t stop it appearing on Armenia’s coat of arms.

• Snow-capped Mount Ararat is the principal national symbol of the country and is considered by many Armenians to be a sacred monument. The massif has been featured in Armenian art and literature and is depicted on the country's coat of arms, however, it is actually located within Turkey.

It has not always been that way; the holy mountain has been passed between the Kingdom of Armenia, Persia, Russia, and Turkey.

• The Armenian capital, Yerevan, is one of the world’s oldest inhabited cities, built as it was 29 years before Rome. Overlooked by the snow-capped Mount Ararat, the capital has a bewildering number of historic spots, not to mention a clutch of excellent museums.

The country’s economy has undergone a profound transformation since independence. Sustained growth, ambitious reforms, as well as inflows of capital and remittances have made a market-oriented environment.

However, the global financial crisis has impacted the economy significantly. Armenia is a modern and fast-growing country with rich history and traditions, beautiful scenery, excellent cuisine, low taxes, low crime rate, and low cost of living.

The Government continues to enjoy strong public support. Along with a parliamentary majority, it has a firm platform to advance its reform agenda, including far-reaching changes to Armenia’s economic and judicial systems.

On the foreign policy front, Armenia has strengthened its ties with the European Union while maintaining a strong partnership with the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union.

Following robust real GDP growth of 7.5 percent in 2017 and 5.2 percent in 2018, economic performance remained strong in 2019, expanding by 7.6 percent.

Among the sectors, services drove growth following an acceleration in tourism output and continued dynamism in trade. The industry also expanded strongly, driven by a rebound in mining production.

Inflationary pressures remained low, with an average annual inflation rate of 1.4% in 2019 (down from 2.5% in 2018), well below the lower band of the Central Bank of Armenia’s inflation target range. The labor market has improved, but the unemployment rate remains exceptionally high at 18 percent.

Real wages also continue to grow and were higher by 4.5 percent in 2019, though this may not have had an impact on the large segment of the population that remains employed in agriculture and the informal sector.

Armenian economy is ideal for a semester abroad. With a stably international trade system, the country is making strides on the global market and gives international students the perfect study abroad environment.
